“For the man is that certainly, that he is secretly.”
Josh -
A fortuitous quotation… for I just posted a blog entry today concerning my reading yesterday morning of William Jay’s exercises, in which he takes up the subject of Job 1:9. Jay takes us to task for judging the secret motives of others - that is, claiming the ability to see what Brooks in the quote you give addresses as the ‘real man’. We can judge only on what we are privy to… and that never includes the secret motivations of someone else’s heart. Jay also addresses our own unwillingness to peer inside our own hearts, which we DO have access to, and judge our OWN motives in all things. We so often readily reverse this in life, and should be ashamed for doing so.

Indeed, Todd. I oft see the blackness of my own heart and the darkness of my own motivations while in self examination. God is certainly gracious to save such as wretched worm.
